Diana Hess, MA

Chattanooga Affiliate Manager

Diana Hess serves as the Chattanooga affiliate manager of the Sustainable Classrooms program for Urban Green Lab, supporting sustainable living education. Originally from the Atlanta area, Diana holds a Bachelor’s in Anthropology from the University of Northern Colorado and a Master's in Teaching from Armstrong Atlantic State in Savannah, Georgia. After graduating from college, she moved back home and served in AmeriCorps with the Fugees Family, a nonprofit in Atlanta working with refugee students and their families. It was this experience that motivated her to become an educator, with hopes to be able to help other at-risk students. Once she received her Master’s, she returned to the Fugees Academy as their middle school science teacher.

Environmental education has been a thread throughout her teaching career. After moving to Chattanooga, Diana accepted the STEAM lab teacher position at a local elementary school. She created an after-school environmental club where her students, along with local nonprofits, businesses, and UTC's Environmental Education program built a rain garden. During the last three summers, she worked as a camp educator at the Tennessee Aquarium's summer camp, where biology, ecology, and conservation concepts were explored using the many different outdoor activities and environments the Chattanooga area has to offer. She looks forward to finding new ways to inspire and educate students on the many environmental issues we face today.

Diana currently works at the Creative Discovery Museum as an Outreach Educator where she takes hands-on science lessons to schools in southeast TN, northeast AL, and northwest GA. The interactive lessons are a lot of fun and help build foundational science knowledge students need.

Diana looks forward to using her experience as an educator, her knowledge of the Chattanooga area, and passion for environmental education to bring Urban Green Lab’s mission to Chattanooga.
