meet christian ryan: new ROUNDTABLE manager 

Urban Green Lab welcomes Christian Ryan, Ed.D, LEED AP, to our team as the manager of the Corporate Sustainability Roundtable.  Christian served as the Sustainability Coordinator for Western Kentucky University for 10 years, working to reduce environmental impacts and operating costs, and cultivating a culture of sustainability.  She brings a wealth of leadership, sustainability, and curriculum development experience in the door.  Click here to learn more or send her a note at

less talk, more action: New roundtable format 

Moving forward, Roundtable meetings will look a little different.  With fewer presentations, most of our work together will focus on what your company is achieving, formulating policy recommendations for the 2018 Sustainable Workplace Report, and helping shape training curricula to teach your workforce about the basics of waste reduction in the workplace.  Come prepared to roll up your sleeves...

In 2018, China began enforcement of its National Sword policy, which bans 24 types of solid waste from import, including from the U.S.  In addition to the closing of Middle Point Landfill in Tennessee, it's just one more reason to prevent waste.  The following resources explain how China’s plastic ban impacts you and the globe, and how we might turn this problem to opportunity: Plastic Recycling is Broken. Metro Nashville Public Works and Davidson County Solid Waste Region Board have been working to develop a long-term Solid Waste Master Plan with the goal of zero waste.  See the Master Plan Progress Report – May 2018.  The task force also wants your feedback to inform the plan.  Click here to share your perspective: Nashville & Davidson County Solid Waste and Recycling Survey.

3. SWANA confrence aug. 20-22 & Kroger

SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) will be holding their annual conference in Nashville the week of August 20th.  Over 3,000 experts from across the U.S. will attend.  We hope to offer Roundtable members the opportunity to attend the conference.

Want to improve your knowledge on the topic of food waste before the Aug. 23 Roundtable?  The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) provides this excellent resource: Food Matters: What We Waste and How We Can Expand the Amount of Food We Rescue.

On July 10th, Urban Green Lab trained 30 Metro Nashville Public School teachers as part of the launch for a new statewide curriculum on sustainable living in Tennessee schools called "Sustainable Classrooms."  Click here to read the official press release.
